About this excursion

This private day trip travels from the tropical south coast into Sri Lanka’s central highlands. The scenery changes from coastal plains to winding mountain roads, waterfalls and tea-covered slopes before reaching Ella. It is a long but rewarding day, so pickup is early and the pace is agreed around your resort and road conditions.

What to expect

Elephant experience

The confirmed itinerary includes a visit to an elephant centre. The exact format is checked before departure; animal behaviour and particular interactions can never be guaranteed.

Ravana Falls

Ravana Falls is one of the best-known natural landmarks near Ella. The flow changes with rainfall, and the length of the stop depends on weather and safe access beside the mountain road.

Nine Arch Bridge and Ella

A walk through tropical greenery leads towards the Nine Arch Bridge, whose stone arches and working railway line have become an emblem of Ella. The route also allows time to experience the hill town and its surrounding views.

Tea country

Tea estates shape much of the highland landscape. A factory visit, tasting and tea shop can be discussed for the extended programme when opening hours allow.

Optional elements

The source itinerary also mentions a scenic train ride, Little Adam’s Peak, an Ayurvedic garden, a Buddhist temple and free time at Ravana Pool Club. These are not automatically included in the base route. Train travel depends on ticket availability, while the pool, wing swing and zip-line are optional activities paid locally. Feeding wild monkeys is not a guaranteed part of the tour.

Planning the day

Bring comfortable shoes, water, a light rain jacket and an extra layer for the cooler hills. Lunch and optional activities are paid separately. Travellers who prefer more time in the highlands may consider the two-day Heart of Sri Lanka journey; wildlife enthusiasts can compare it with the Yala safari.
